Coronavirus and Working Remotely as Language Professionals

COVID-19 is top of mind for nearly everyone in the world, including our members and our collective clients. A number of translation firms are offering free services for coronavirus content, including some AILIA members - and the requests are coming in quickly.

As language industry professionals, we are very lucky to be able to work remotely at times like these. But how do we stay connected securely if we are used to working in an office outside of the home? Here are a few tech tips for those who may have to work remotely for more than a few days.

La COVID-19 est en tête des préoccupations de presque chaque personne sur la planète, y compris nos membres et nos clients. AILIA held their Annual General Meeting in Ottawa, Canada on Thursday, February 27th followed on Friday, February 28th by Rendez-vous Ottawa, a full day conference.

AILIA is proud to announce the newly elected Board of Directors.

L’AILIA a tenu son assemblée générale annuelle à Ottawa le jeudi 27 février. À l’AGA a succédé une conférence d’un jour, Rendez-vous Ottawa, qui s’est déroulée le vendredi 28 février.

L’AILIA est fière d’annoncer la composition de son Conseil d’administration nouvellement élu.

Sharon Steinberg, former AILIA President and Kim Pines, former AILIA Treasurer and Vice-Chair Communications (Translations.CA) were nominated as Honorary Directors joining Nicole Sévigny who is also an Honorary Director.

Rendez-vous Ottawa conference was a great success largely due to the absolutely meticulously planned content for learning, the exchange of ideas, technology, clients, profitability, and overall health of our business.

• The quality of the speakers and the diversity of opinions and point of views gave attendees a 360 view on each topic in a friendly open environment whereby difference of opinion was encouraged and respected.
• Global input: Having Slator and Nimzi take an active part of our event in Ottawa speak to the direction and the potential of our industry nationally and globally.
• Clients and potential buyers of Localization services: Having the point of view of clients being shared and appreciated by the audience which was mostly service or tech provider gaves attendees an outside glimpse on what the market expectations are which will enable participant to modify selling and marketing strategies accordingly. Very valuable.

About 100 industry stakeholders attended the conference, shared opinions, thoughts and suggestions. An excellent occasion for networking and meeting key industry people and executives.

We were very fortunate to have had amazIng speakers. During the day, the conference participants had the opportunity to choose among various sessions to discuss topics and industry news. Une centaine d’intervenants du milieu ont participé à la conférence et ont partagé leurs opinions, leurs idées et leurs suggestions. La conférence a créé d’excellentes occasions de réseautage et de réunion pour les principaux intervenants et dirigeants de notre industrie.

Nous avons eu la chance d’écouter des conférenciers formidables. Pendant la journée, les participants de la conférence ont eu la possibilité de faire leur choix parmi un éventail de séances afin de discuter des sujets d’intérêt et des actualités de l’industrie. Big News: New Partnership Agreement signed Between Translation Bureau, CGSB & AILIA

The Translation Bureau and the Canadian General Standards Board signed a new partnership agreement with AILIA, the Language Industry Association.

AILIA has entered into a Project Agreement with the Translation Bureau for the development of a new edition of Canada's CAN/CGSB 131.10 Translation Services Standard.

The signing ceremony took place on Monday, February 24, 2020.

AILIA's working group was Betty Cohen, Maryse Benhoff, Kim Pines, Sharon Steinberg, Lola Bendana and Donald Barabé. President, Sharon Steinberg signed on AILIA's behalf.

This is an important step forward for Canada’s translation industry and a direct result of all of the hard work that AILIA has done to advance the profession.

Grande nouvelle : Nouvel accord de partenariat conclu entre le Bureau de la traduction, l'ONGC et l'AILIA

Le Bureau de la traduction et l'Office des normes générales du Canada ont signé une nouvelle entente de partenariat avec l'AILIA, l'Association de l'industrie de la langue.

L'AILIA a conclu un accord relatif à un projet avec le Bureau de la traduction pour l'élaboration d'une nouvelle édition de la norme canadienne CAN/CGSB 131.10 pour services de traduction.

La cérémonie de signature a eu lieu le lundi 24 février 2020.

Le groupe de travail de l'AILIA était composé de Betty Cohen, Maryse Benhoff, Kim Pines, Sharon Steinberg, Lola Bendana et Donald Barabé. Notre présidente, Sharon Steinberg, a apposé sa signature au nom de l'AILIA.

Il s'agit d'un jalon important pour l'industrie de la traduction au Canada et d'un résultat direct de tout le travail acharné que l'AILIA a accompli pour faire progresser la profession.

Archibald to chair ISO committee on terminology and language coding

The Standards Council of Canada, the Canadian arm of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), has appointed James Archibald as Chair of the ISO/TC 37/SC 2 mirror committee on Terminology workflow and language coding. Dr. Archibald is also the vice chair of ISO/TC 37 whose work focuses on language and terminology.
