A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT | MESSAGE DE NOTRE PRÉSIDENT
President’s Message
I am excited to announce a new partnership between the Canadian Language Industry Association (CLIA) and the Association of Translation Companies (ATC), which represents the interests of language service companies in the UK and internationally. This collaboration builds on CLIA's commitment to increasing visibility and networking opportunities for our members. More importantly, it paves the way for valuable knowledge sharing, allowing us to exchange best practices, industry insights, and innovative solutions to the challenges we face.
We have invited ATC members to join us at WorldSpeak 2025 in Montreal on April 16, immediately following GALA 2025 (April 13–15). This is an excellent opportunity to expand professional networks and enhance industry knowledge. Attendees who register for both events will enjoy exclusive discounted member rates.
A special thanks to Chantal Kamgne for her invaluable assistance in making this partnership possible. The support and collaboration of our members drive our growth and success!

A message from Raisa McNab, CEO, Association of Translation Companies (ATC)
The ATC is coming together with the Canadian Language Industry Association (CLIA), to form a Commonwealth alliance – a partnership of two strong national associations sharing the same mission: to act as the voice of language service companies and to promote the value of language services, translation and interpreting.
The Canadian Language Industry Association – Association canadienne de l’industrie de la langue is the national not-for-profit trade association of the language industry in Canada, working in collaboration with its language service company members, academia, language professionals, standards organisations, technology providers, research institutions, entities in all levels of government, buyers of language services, and other associations in the language sector.
Operating in a diverse geographical and linguistic landscape, and within Canada’s bilingual society, CLIA gives its members a unified voice for domestic advocacy and to help to promote growth in a global competitive marketplace.
CLIA’s President Peter Madahian is excited about the new partnership: “In a very rapidly changing global economic and political landscape, alliances and cooperation with strong industry partners are essential. Canada and Canadian businesses are looking towards the UK and the EU for opportunities for trade, and Europe is looking to forge new connections within the Canadian market. This is where language service companies with connections on both sides of the Atlantic can play a significant role in breaking down cultural and language barriers.”
The ATC’s newly-elected Chair Corinne Saynor Smith echoes the sentiment: “It’s a total no-brainer for our two prominent national associations to come together. CLIA and the ATC share the same values around building our professional communities, promoting the value of language services, and looking boldly into the future. While our language-related legislative frameworks are very different, the language services industry itself is very similar, with small companies forming the backbone of the industry. We look forward to working with CLIA on initiatives ranging from cross-Atlantic trade to industry standards, and beyond.”

LATEST INDUSTRY NEWS | DERNIERES NOUVELLES DE L'INDUSTRIE
Your Questions Answered About the New McGill Multilingual Digital Communication DegreeMany of our members have expressed interest in the new Master of Science (Applied) in Multilingual Digital Communication offered by the McGill School of Continuing Studies. We had the chance to talk to the program director,Dr. Nicolette Papastefanou, about it. The program offers two distinct advantages; additional expertise in digital communication and localization, and AI language technology training. It is the first degree of its kind in Canada, and will strengthen the Canadian language industry with the expertise of its students. It is completely possible to take this course while working full-time by design, since it is offered through the School of Continuing Studies. Delivery The course will be delivered entirely online, part-time at 6:00-9:00 in the evening. Students can take up to three courses per semester, and can choose to take as few as one course per semester if affordability and time don't allow for more. The quickest amount of time you can complete it in is 2.5 years, with program requirements setting the maximum at 5 years for those who wish to take fewer courses. While it will be delivered in English, students will have tools available to simultaneously translate the courses (through technology only). Course Material The course material is unique in that it will pivot to adapt to changes in technology, with some of the material being delivered by experts in the use of language tech. It will not consist completely of a series of pre-recorded courses, although those will have their place for more evergreen subjects.
Prerequisites A bachelor's degree is a prerequisite, and is non-negotiable. Work experience may be taken into account if the grade point average is lower than the admissibility requirements, which you can view here. Everyone is encouraged to apply who has a bachelor's, even with a lower CGPA. Affordability The program is extremely affordable for Quebec residents, at a cost of $98.91 per credit (there are 45 total credits in the program). Fees jump significantly for non-Quebec residents and international students. This cost is McGill policy and is not negotiable. However, the non-Quebec resident cost of $412.00 per credit is extremely comparable to an MBA, with a part-time MBA at Schulich in Ontario costing $7,273 per term. Since there is no program like it in Canada that offers such unique value and education in the tools we need at the time that we need it most, the ROI on this program for Canadian language industry professionals is extremely high.
